Common questions answered.
What does NOT LISTED actually mean? expand_more
NOT LISTED means that the screened HS code or CAS number was not found as an explicit entry on the applicable control lists checked within your subscription scope.
It does not mean the goods are automatically free of export control obligations. As an exporter, you remain responsible for verifying general technical descriptions and catch-all clauses — which may apply to goods even without an explicit list entry. This is especially important for CAS numbers.
Why do I see an ERROR badge? expand_more
Two primary causes:
- Invalid code: The HS code or CAS number you entered does not exist in the STC reference database. Check for typos or use a more general code.
- Outside subscription scope: You are screening a jurisdiction or regime combination that is not included in your current licence. Click the badge to see the exact message. Contact TENSIG to expand your subscription.
Can I enter both an HS code and a CAS number on the same row? expand_more
controlledItemId to avoid counting the same entry multiple times.
How does the CAS check-digit validation work? expand_more
A CAS number has the format XXXXXXX-YY-Z. The last digit Z is the check digit, calculated as follows:
- Take all digits except the last, in order
- Multiply each digit by its position from the right (rightmost = 1, next = 2, etc.)
- Sum the products
- The check digit = sum mod 10
The app performs this check instantly as you type. An invalid check digit means the CAS number contains a typo.
Why does SAN always use EU jurisdiction? expand_more
EU jurisdiction covers the full set of EU Council regulations — which is what matters for sanctions compliance. The Org field you enter is used for DUA and MIL only.
How do I format the Excel file for import? expand_more
Your .xlsx file must use these columns, starting from row 2 (row 1 = header, skipped):
| Col A | Col B | Col C | Col D | Col E |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skip | HS Code | CAS Number | Origin | Destination |
Column A can contain anything (e.g. a product reference). At least one of Column B or C must have a value per row, otherwise the row is skipped.
Does Tensig provide ECCN or EAR99 classifications? expand_more
No. Tensig screens at HS-code level against the control regimes (dual-use, military, sanctions) and returns a hit when the HS code could fall under a controlled category. The definitive ECCN or EAR99 classification of a specific product is determined by the exporter or manufacturer based on the product's technical specifications — that step cannot be performed at HS-code level alone.
A single HS code can cover both EAR99 products and products under a specific ECCN. Tensig flags that there is a potential issue. The resolution — "I hold a classification rationale, licence or certificate, so there is no issue" — is handled in the customer's own system (ERP, customs platform, document management).
This is a deliberate design choice: most customers already have a system where that documentation lives. Duplicating it inside Tensig would force them to maintain the same data in two places.
The pattern in practice
Tensig keeps the hit visible → the customer resolves it in their own system by referencing the EAR99 classification rationale or licence — exactly the same pattern as a licence or exemption disposition.
